At Our Lady Star of the Sea, our Music Ministry consists of a Children’s Choir, ages 6-12, and a multi-generational ensemble of singers and musicians from age 13 to seasoned citizens. We begin our rehearsals in October and continue throughout Pentecost. The choirs lead the assembly and assist in full and active participation in the sung celebration for the Liturgy of the Word and of the Eucharist. The choir proclaims a broad range of sacred music including chant, early music, classical, and compositions of living and current composers. The beauty and dignity of our sacred music has a profound impact on teh celebration of our Liturgies. Our talented and dedicated ministers of music offer their voices and instruments in joyous prayer and worship.
Our cantors and instrumentalists enrich our liturgies with the necessary skills to proclaim, lead, and enhance the music for our worshipping parish community. Being able to read music for choir members is preferred but not a must, just bring a willingness to learn and a desire to proclaim the good news through the Music.
Instrumentalists should have the ability to play in any given key signature, be able to transpose, and to sightread music efficently. Sacred prayer sung by the faithful truly enriches our experience in the call to serve on another. St Augustine once remarked “To sing, is to pray twice.”

We are now transitioning from the “Mass of Creation” to the “Mass of Renewal” for the Season of Easter going into summer. This Mass setting is filled with “tone painting,” a musical writing technique that describes when the notes and words are working in harmony to express the literal meaning of a piece of music. Tone painting in music is known to date as far back as Gregorian Chant.
Thank you for your full and active participation as we continue to spread joy in the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus.
Listen to the songs featured in the links below to familiarize yourself with the music you will be hearing during this “Mass of Renewal season.
